What are the causes of thickness in pituitary gland?
Thickness in the pituitary gland could be caused by a prolactinoma. It is a benign tumour of the pituitary gland that produces a hormone called prolactin.
1.Pituitary tumor leading to destuction of the gland--- this results in panhypopituitarism i.e. decreased secretion of all pituitary hormones. 2. thrombosis of pituitary bld. vessels also causes destruction of the gland again resulting in panhypopituitarism. 3. acidophilic tumours dev. in the gland which result in production of large amts. of GH (gigantism, acromegaly) 4. postpartum pituitary necrosis---sheehans syndrome.
Hypothalamus has direct control over the pituitary gland. So many releasing factors are secreted by hypothalamus to pituitary gland. You have portal circulation between hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. So the releasing factors are directly poured to pituitary gland. Hypothalamus is affected by the brain. So you have indirect control over the pituitary gland.
