The main reason is to have sex without getting pregnant. Some might take Birth Control pills because they have conditions that make pregnancy unsafe for them. For instance, they might have Diabetes, Heart disease, asthma, or problems with their female parts, so they take birth control pills so they won't get pregnant and risk their lives or produce deformed offspring. Some medications are so dangerous to possible offspring that doctors will make women take birth control pills with them. A few who live in dangerous locations might use birth control pills to prevent pregnancy from rape.

Some people take contraceptive pills for reasons that have nothing to do with pregnancy. They may take them for skin conditions such as acne. Male to female transsexuals may also take birth control pills to help get female secondary features.

If we include condoms and similar barrier devices, then the purpose is to not only prevent pregnancy, but to reduce the chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
