∙ 14y agoA bilayer is made of phospholipids. The head group of the phospholipid is hydrophilic and faces outward from the bilayer. The tails of the phospholipid are hydrophobic and face inward. A bilayer is composed of 2 layers of phospholipids with the tails all on the inside of the bilayer.
The bilayer also contains transmembrane and surface proteins which have a variety of roles such as signalling, structure and transport of material. proteins exist on 'rafts' which are bunches of proteins surrounded by cholesterols.
In addition, proteins and lipids can also anchor sugar chains which also act in signalling.

∙ 10y agoThe plasma membrane is fluid. It has lipids such as cholesterol that slow the fluid movement. It has proteins embedded in it that are for communication and they allow movement into and out of the cell. The membrane has two layers and so is called a lipid bilayer.
