Normally you have two wires one will be a solid color and one will be the same color but has a stripe (black) that will be your negative. But sometimes it won't matter if you have reversed unless they run to an amp.
on drivers side rear pull the storage bucket out of the back seat and the speaker wires and the cab light wires run through there

Pop off the grill undo the 4 bolts 7mm socket. Lift out speaker and undo wires. Your best bet is going to junk yard due to the odd size of speaker.

There is no ground for any of the speakers in a car. You will find to wires that go to the speaker but NEVER have the speaker wires touch any body metal. If you tie any of the speaker wires to ground you will short out the amplifier in the radio. On Ford vehicles the radio outputs are what they call Bridged Tied Loads. The speaker wires are not referenced to ground or battery. If you wish to find out the phasing of the speaker just put a 9 volt battery across the speaker wires and the speaker cone will either advance or retrack. Do this to all the speakers and note what color wir was on the 9 volt battery terminal

I had this very same problem with my Chevrolet Silverado. The only thing that will cure this problem is replacing all your Oxygen Sensors and running premium fuel.
You need to take your vehicle to a dealership and hook it up to their diagnostics to turn that off; not a good idea to go cutting wires.
A 1983 Cutlass CD wire harness has orange, yellow, black, gray, pink, and brown colored wires. The front speaker wires are dark and light green, tan, and gray. The back speaker wires are light and dark blue, yellow, and brown.
if you go to your local car stereo shop and ask for a wiring harness for a 94 mercury topaz. the colors on there are the same as with the cables on your topaz. blue, blue and black, green, green and black, purple, purple and black, gray, gray and black. those are the colors of the cables, i don't remember what color goes to what speaker though. the color with the black line going through it is the ground. the battery wires are red, the ground wires are black, the memory wire for a stereo will be yellow.
The plug wires could be connected wrong. If that's not it, you'll need to check the diagnostic code.

Other things that speaker wires can be used for is power transmission. Speaker wires have negative and positive glued together in the insulation, it isn't intended for this purpose but can work.
