In physics, a contact force is a force that acts at the point of contact between two objects,[1] in contrast to body forces. Contact forces are described by Newton's laws of motion, as with all other forces in dynamics.

Contact forces are ubiquitous and are responsible for most visible interactions between matter. Pushing a car up a hill or kicking a ball are some everyday examples where contact forces are at work. In the first case the force is continuously applied by the person on the car, while in the second case the force is delivered in a shortimpulse. Certain contact forces describe specific phenomena and are important enough to have been given unique names. The most common instances of this include friction, normal force, and tension.

In the Standard Model of modern physics, the four fundamental forces of nature are known to be non-contact forces. The strong and weak interaction primarily deal with forces within atoms, while gravity only affects objects on an astronomical scale. Molecular and quantum physics show that the electromagnetic force is the fundamental interaction responsible for contact forces. The interaction between macroscopic objects can be roughly described as resulting from the electromagnetic interactions between protons and electrons of the atomic constituents of these objects. Everyday objects on Earth do not actually touch each other; rather contact forces are the result of the interactions of the electrons at or near the surfaces of the objects (exchange force).

Contact forces arise in the context of Newtonian Mechanics and refers to the interaction of the surfaces of two masses. Contact forces arise from the electromagnetic force, one of the four fundamental forces and so the list of contact forces may differ between texts and instructors.

Among those you may find are the Normal Force, the Spring Force and Frictional Forces.

An example of the Normal Force: A mass resting on a table top (a horizontal surface) is being pulled downward by gravity and pushed upward by the surface through which it can not pass. This latter is the Normal Force. Because the velocity of the object is not changing (see the phrase "at rest") the sum of the Gravitational (mg) and Normal (N) Forces equals zero. In this case mg = -N, where the minus sign indicates that the two forces point in opposite directions. The expressions for the Normal Force become more complicated when the object has a changing velocity (non zero acceleration) and if the orientation of the surface is not horizontal.

The Spring Force: Arises when a spring is deformed from some equilibrium point (x0). The magnitude of the force is, Fs = - k (x -x0), where the negative sign shows that the resulting force acts to restore the spring to its original position. At the microscopic level the table top example is a spring force. The gravitational force deformed the table very slightly and the molecular bonds within the table seek to restore the shape of the table top by pushing upwards.

Frictional forces require contact between two surfaces and are often modeled as being proportional to the normal force, often modeled as Ff >= - mu |N|.
