Rattlesnakes are really harmful, because sometimes snake bites can kill people. Actually, the most dangerous snake is called the Western Daimondback rattler.
They can be deadly. If you are bitten by one you should seek medical attention immediately. You should not panic. When you panic, your heart rate speeds up which makes your blood flow speed up and brings the poison to your heart much quicker.
Rattlesnake venom is highly toxic; untreated bites can be fatal, or can lead to loss of the bitten limb. Many snakebites happen when people unwarily hike or stop to rest around their hiding places; most snakebites happen when people attempt to kill or provoke a snake of any kind, but rattlesnakes are particularly dangerous because of its speed. Rattlesnakes (pit vipers) have an unusually long striking distance; if you see one be certain to keep at least its body length distant from it, and be much further away if this is possible. The snake may look as though it's innocently resting but can move to strike before you could possible evade the attack. They are so fast that even the most experienced of snake handlers exercise great caution around them, and some still are bitten. If I was on a very narrow track, with a rockface on one side and a sheer drop on the other, and spotted a rattlesnake ahead I'd simply find a place to sit within view but as far away as possible - not near hiding places for other snakes! and wait for it to go away rather than attempt to pass it. If on horseback I'd wheel the horse around to face the opposite direction while we waited. If I was simply out for a recreational ride or walk, I'd go home rather than hang about in rattlesnake country: if you can see one, there will be others around. If you're riding, be aware many horses will shy at the sight of any snake. All riders should take note of the terrain as they travel, for their own and their horse's safety - pits and rocks and low branches can prove disastrous - and if you spot a snake on the track turn your horse immediately. The last thing you want is to be thrown, possibly far from help and maybe out of phone range, and especially not on top of a snake. Never assume an apparently dead rattlesnake is safe. It isn't.

Very Dangerous. The Rattlesnake venom is highly Hemotoxic. The venom travels through the bloodstream, destroying tissue and causing swelling, internal bleeding and intense pain. Some subspecies also contain a neurotoxic component in their venom that may cause paralysis. Rattlesnake bites are rarely fatal to adult humans. If an anti-venom treatment is given within the first 1-2 hours, the probability of recovery is nearly 99%.
If left alone, rattlesnakes are very peaceful and beneficial to the environment. It is when man puts himself in danger by not using common sense and molests or tries to capture or kill these snakes that things can go drastically bad in a short time. Rattlesnakes help control populations of rodents that carry diseases and compete with man for food. They need to be respected and allowed their place in the environment.
Probably because they possess highly-toxic venom ! Some species are also known to be particularly 'bad-tempered' and will strike for no reason.
