Quilting is an ancient art, yet is very simple to accomplish. What you need is a frame, sissors, quilting needles, thread, material, and batting. The quilting frame is to both hold the quilt and to keep it taut. Frames range in size from embroidery hoops to bed-sized frames that a community can quilt. In order to make a quilt, one decides on a pattern. Quilt patterns are amazingly varied, from classic patch quilts to regional patterns to national patterns. They can be simple like the nine patch pattern or complex, employing elements of trapunto, quilting, and garment shaping. Once the design has been decided and made, the top (the quilt pattern) is layered with a bottom base, batting (the filler) and the top. This "sandwich" is then placed into the quilt frame. Securing the quilt in the frame insures that the material won't bunch and the stitches will be even. If one uses an embroidery hoop, then one must work from the center of the quilted piece to the outer edge in order to insure that the piece is evenly stitched and properly tight. Quilting needles are short so that the stitches can be made quickly and evenly. They are designed to hold no more than two or three three stitches on the needle for accurate pattern compliance. If one is making a single color quilt, this can be of paramount importance because there is no other pattern other than the one that is sewn into the fabric.
the beginner quilters only had a needle, thread and scissors. you can work perfectly fine with these basic tools but today you can find a large selection of notions to help you along. basic to any quilter today is their rotary cutter, ruler, and mat. if you are doing machine sewing, a guide on the machine is a good idea because the seam allowance must always be 1/4" of an inch. good luck, http://thequilter.wordpress.com/
For basic hand quilting, you will need:
Fabric * ( see note below )
Thread * ( see note below )
Batting
Backing
Thread for quilting or tieing ( I use 3 strands of embroidery floss, or 2 strands of pearle cotton, or 2 strands of crochet cotton )
Equipment:
Scissors
Needles ( for assembling blocks, you will use one that is comfortable for you. For actual 'quilt' work, ( sewing the quilt top to the back with batting in the middle ) you will need quilting needles, start with a size 8 and try to work toward smaller needles, to an 11 or 12. The smaller the needle, the tinier the stitch. . . . very desirable ! )
Thimble [ a GOOD quilters thimble ! It should have a ridge around the top, so that the needle does not slip. There are some wonderful thimbles available. Some ( my favorite ) even has one side open to allow for the finger nail, and has very deep dimples, so that the needle does not slip off the thimble. ]
Needle threader. ( quilting needles are sooooo tiny ! )
I use a sheet of sand paper to hold the fabric still while I am drawing my quilt lines on the fabric. You may want to try it.
If you are using the more modern method of strip quilting, you will need:
A GOOD cutting board ( self healing - Olfa or OmniGrid make wonderful self healing boards. )
Straight edge tools ( rulers. Various sizes, depending on what you are making. )
Rotary Cutter
Sewing machine.
* Note to fabrics.
This is a matter of opinion -
100% cottons make wonderful quilts that should last for generations ! If properly taken care of, a quilt will last 100+ years. Use a GOOD grade of quilt fabric ! Stores that carry 'discount' fabrics ( will not name names, though I wish I could ! ) are carrying 1st, 2nd or 3rd run fabrics. These runs are the 'test' runs, before they lay out the GOOD fabric, to be printed. They are cheaply made, the dyes are not perfect, the patterns are usually 'off' . . .
A good quilters shop will carry ( as a rule ) only the best fabrics. ( 4th and 5th runs ).
Note for thread.
When using 100% cotton fabrics, always use 100% cotton thread. When you look at polyester thread through a microscope, you will see that it looks like a saw blade ! Those little saw toothed filaments will saw through your fabrics in time, resulting in a quilt that is falling apart. Even cotton covered polyester will work it's way through your fabric.
All you really need to sew is fabric, scissors, thread and needle. There are many other items that can be added to your supply, such as pins, pin holders, thimble to protect your fingers, up to hundreds of other items.
The basic supplies for a new quilter are a sewing machine, a sewing lamp, a steam iron, machine needles, scissors, thread, pressing pad, pins, tape measure, and a seam ripper. Material and quilting patterns are also required. There are lots of classes offered by quilting shops that can sell the equipment and get new quilters started.
A quilting kit is a package of items required to create a specific quilt. It will usually include a pattern, enough fabric to make the quilt and binding and backing fabric.

The origins of quilting are unknown; quilting has been around for thousands of years. The earliest known depictions of quilting is on an ancient Egyptian statue, dated 3400 B.C.
There are a large number of quilting magazines available. Some of the best known include Quilt, Quilt Sample, Quits and More, McCalls Quilting, Quilting For You, The Quilter Magazine, American Patchwork & Quilting, Primitive Quilts and Quiltmakers 100 Blocks.
The question is difficult to answer, as "properties" is not a quilting term. However, quilting consists of three layers (top, batt, and back) secured together by stitching.
Getting quilting books for beginners can be really helpful. You can find lots of tips and ideas as well from reading blogs dedicated to quilting. You can also attend workshops for quilting for a better learning experience.
