ADHD has three subtypes recognized: predominately hyperactive-impulsive, predominately inattentive, and combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive. The last type is commonly referred to as the "combined" type, and most children with ADHD have the combined type.

ADHD is "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder". Typically an individual with ADHD will display overly active/impulsive behavior in conjunction with difficulty focusing and staying on task. An individual with ADHD may blurt out answers, interrupt, or have to address something mid conversation, otherwise they may quickly forget what they were going to say. An individual with ADHD may also be very fidgety and have difficulty staying still. Acting before or without thinking is very common. ADD is "Attention Deficit Disorder" and is very much like ADHD but without the hyperactivity and impulsivity.

This is a great question. In the current psychiatric nosology, there are the following subtypes:

  • inattentive
  • hyperactive
  • combined
  • "not otherwise specified"

"Not otherwise specified" is used to indicate a true variant of ADHD which is not captured by the current diagnostic system.

Dr. Daniel Amen believes his research supports several subtypes of ADHD that aren't in the current DSM. And Dr Russell Barkley, too, believes that future research will identify attentional/executive disorders that are similar to the current ADHD categories but not yet adequately understood or described.

We've been closing in on ADHD for about 40 years, but there's a lot more to learn about these conditions and their relationship to normal neurodevelopment. Stay tuned!

In combination, ADHD is usually diagnosed at a young age and as they grow older, this causes them to develop schizophrenia.
