Drug addiction can have a physical and psychological (physiological) affect
on a person. The physical aspect of an addiction is when the body cannot function without the drug for example if someone goes cold turkey off of nicotine that person may get the "shakes". Nicotine boosts adrenaline but gives the person the illusion that they are being relaxed by the nicotine. When a person goes "Cold Turkey" and the shakes occur the body needs the nicotine to relax and stop shaking.
The psychological affect a drug can have on a person is the person
believing they need the drug to function. This happens when a person becomes dependent on the drug to make them feel or act a certain way. Without the drug the person could seem more snappy or on edge because they are frustrated that they don't have that drug. Also the drug can change the brains chemical balance. Which can even lead to depression.
There are different affects for each drug. The affects of being addicted to Rolaids are going to be far less devastating than the affects of being addicted to Steroids.
Some people use drugs so often that the drugs become addicting.

The effects of drugs are to alter, mimic, change, interfere, kill, stop, speed, accelerate, decelerate, etc. aspects of the both the physical/physiological body or produce central nervous system effects. On a general level, prescribed drugs (taken as directed) can relieve symptoms of viruses, bacterial illness, disease and pain. There are always side effects, and some people notice them more than others. Misuse of drugs often is due to these other side effects--mood changing, euphoria and so on. At this level, drugs can affect human behavior, lifestyle and relationships and may be addicting.
