The causes of World War II lie almost completely outside of the problems that existed in the Middle East. This is not to say that Middle Easterners did not take sides during the war (Jews and Iranians being pro-Ally, Arabs being pro-Axis, and Turks being adamantly neutral), but the causes of the war lie in Europe and East Asia.
WW2 led to increased tension in much of the Middle East. Palestine (which includes what are now Israel and Jordan) was under British rule and Iraq under indirect British rule at the time. Some Arabs, such as the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, were pro-Axis because they hated the British and the Jews. They was also a pro-Axis rebellion in May 1941 in Iraq, which was suppressed by Britain. Later that year, Britain and the Soviet Union jointly occupied pro-Axis Iran. Britain wasn't particularly popular with the Jewish population, either, as it had imposed quotas on the numbers allowed to enter Palestine, among other oppressive tactics.=
It had a tremendous effect. The Turks were allied with the Germans and thus lost the war. This led to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire with a revolt led by Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk). Large parts of the Middle East that were formerly under the control of the Turks became independent nations (e.g. Saudi Arabia) and thus the shape of the Middle East as we see it today connects directly with the First World War.
In addition, because of the Middle East theater of the War, much of the Levant was in ruins and had to be rebuilt in the coming years.
The effects of World War II on the Middle East are quite profound. Perhaps the most important effect has occurred through the formation of the nation-state of Israel, the presence of which has changed the landscape of the Middle East and had a ripple-effect throughout the world since the time of its founding.
Devastating, because the European powers arbitrarily drew new borders, created new countries and separated people from their natural habitat.
