In a hotel, marketing is the promotion and advertising of the hotel; running ads, social networking, radio, television, and internet advertising is all bound up in marketing. The sales division of the hotel books meetings, groups, conventions, weddings, and other functions, capitalizing on the consumers reached by the marketing employed by the hotel.
The relationship between the two functions are very close knit and rely entirely on one another. Advertising brings in the consumer for the sales department to reassure the potential customer and help create the purchase. Without the the advertising, most sales would never exist or at least there wouldn't be as many.
