There are many gases which contribute to global warming. Some have a more potent effect than others. The number after the name indicates the equivalent greenhouse gas effect compared to carbon dioxide (the principal man-made greenhouse gas):

  • Water vapour (H2O) = ?
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) = 1
  • Methane (CH4) = 21
  • Nitrous oxide (N2O) = 298
  • Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) = 22,200
  • Chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFC's) = 1000 to 9000

Water vapor is an odd one in the list. It contributes to global warming because as the atmosphere warms (from CO2 and the other greenhouse gases) the warmer atmosphere is able to to hold more water vapor, which in turn captures more heat, thus adding to the warming through the feedback effect. Most models though ignore the cooling effect that is also associated with water vapor and is a problem that even the IPCC admits they do not have a good handle on.

The forcing numbers for all significant green houses gases are as follows:

  • water vapor 36-72%
  • carbon dioxide 9-26%
  • methane 4-9%
  • ozone 3-7%

Nitrogen and Oxygen comprise 99% of the atmosphere of the Earth. Of the remaining 1%, CO2 amounts to 0.04%. CO2 does nothing and is basically plant food.

The six major greenhouse gases causing climate change are:

  1. Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  2. Methane (CH4)
  3. Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
  4. Trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11)
  5. Dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12)
  6. 1,1,1-Trichlorotrifluoromethane (CFC-113)

Carbon dioxide is the primary GG because of its relatively high concentration. Behind that is methane, which also has a relatively high concentration but is more powerful. After that are gases such as halocarbons, purely anthropogenic gases that are extremely potent but not abundant in the atmosphere.

There are many causes of global warming. Some of them and i can tell you that. Some of the causes are:

1.Large amount of cutting trees.

2.Releasing of harmful gases in the air through industries.

3.Acid rain.

4.Trapping of green house gases in the earths atmosphere.

5.Heating up of our planet.

Sorry not able to tell the sixth cause. This much only i know, hope it helps.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) are the greenhouse gases that are producing the enhanced greenhouse effect, which is responsible for global warming.

Actually water vapor is, by conventional agreement, the actual leader for green house gas and global warming theories. The models used to push these theories do not function correctly without adding this gas as the PRIMARY additional driving agent.

Greenhouse gases are not causing any warming what so ever. The Greenhouse effect has never been proven through the scientific method, it is nothing but a "bad hunch". The true driver of the Earth's climate is the Sun and it's natural cycles, with galactic cosmic ray flux, solar and planetary orbital variances, high energy solar wind particles and Nature. Mankind does not have the god like powers to control galactic influences.

Carbon. It's actually known for it's "green house" affect. I don't know if there are any others though...

What can be done to halt the effects of global warming?

Global warming can be halted by halting the greenhouse gases. These gases are the ones responsible for warming.

Do the gases in the atmosphere increase or decrease global warming?

The greenhouse gases are increasing global warming.

Do greenhouse gasses help global warming?

They don't help with global warming naturally but the large buildup of greenhouse gases does assist with global warming.

What gases cause global warming and how?

Greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane, mostly) cause global warming by increasing their levels in the atmosphere. This turns the benign greenhouse effect into an accelerated greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.

What natural greenhouse gases are associated with greenhouse effect?

global warming

Which gas traps heat and helps cause global warming?

All greenhouse gases trap heat. The one most responsible for global warming is Carbon Dioxide.

How does Mexico contribute to global warming?

Mexico does contribute to global warming. It does release greenhouse gases.

How does the increase in greenhouse gases support the theory of global warming?

Part of the theory of global warming is that greenhouse gases capture the earth's heat. If more greenhouse gases are added to the atmosphere then more heat will be retained. We can measure that levels of greenhouse gases have increased, and we can measure that temperatures have risen. These measurements thus support the theory of global warming.

What is a direct result of having greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?

It is supposed that greenhouse gases contribute to global warming.

What are the green gases?

They are not green gases, they are called greenhouse gases and they cause global warming.

What greenhouse gases do in the atmosphere?

Greenhouse gases keep the earth warm.Too much greenhouse gas is causing global warming.

How do greenhouse gasses impact the ozone layer?

Greenhouse gases cause global warming on earth. This global warming can cause ozone depletion.
