To answer this question, first I must elaborate on the different drives available.

First you have a DVD-ROM: This ONLY plays DVDs, and nothing else.

Then there are DVD+-RW: These are for Burning AND playing DVD's.

The new DVD burner is a Blueray Burner: used for burning blueray DVDs.

Most DVD drives are also capable of playing and burning CD's also.

The purpose of a DVD/cd drive is the enables you to watch DVD's and listen to cd's. Also now that there is new software you are enabled to you DVD transfer and recover OS(operating systems) and also install new OS's such as windows 8 and windows vista and many more. In this does not only work for windows other operating systems such as osx system which is mainly found on apple products can also be used to do the same thing.
