The significance of the Battle of Fort Sumter for the American Civil War is difficult to over-estimate because the combat that broke out in and around it in April of 1861 was the basic cause of the war as a whole. Before April 12th (on which the South Carolina troops first besieged and bombarded the fort), there was yet hope for a peaceful settlement of North/South differences; after, there was only the prospect of resolution through violence.

∙ 9y agoIn the context of the American Civil War, the importance of the Battle of Fort Sumter can only with great difficulty be over-stated. It was, after all, the cause of the formal beginning of hostilities between the North and the South. Before being fired upon on April 12, 1861, there was still hope for a peaceful settlement between North and South. Afterward, there was only year after year of violence and bloodshed before a victor could emerge from the conflict.
