The meninges are the layers of membrane that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord. There are three layers of meninges. From inside to outside, these are the pia mater, the arachnoid, and the dura mater. The pia mater forms an outer covering to the cerebral cortex. Then the arachnoid mater, called "arachnoid" because it resembles spider webs. Lastly the dura mater, which translates into "tough mother" in Latin and is the outermost meningeal covering of the brain.
