The Salinas Valley is known as the "Salad Bowl of the World", with agriculture being the hallmark industry in its famously fertile growing conditions. One of the Valley's famous residents, John Steinbeck, made Salinas Valley the setting of many of his novels.
Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. This area had a major influence in his early formative years. Thus, when he started to write, his stories were mostly set in the California area which includes Salinas and the Salinas Valley, Monterey, and parts of the nearby San Joaquin Valley.
