  • nuclear explosives: bombs, warheads, landmines, artillery shells, demolitions, etc.
  • nuclear powered submarines
  • nuclear powered surface ships: aircraft carriers, destroyers, ice breakers, etc.
  • portable reactors to generate electricity and/or heat
Many other ideas have been proposed (e.g. nuclear powered bombers, nuclear explosion pumped x-ray LASERs) but found impractical for various reasons and never actually implemented.

Only two nuclear weapons have been used for the purpose of warfare, both by the United States near the end of World War II. On August 6, 1945, a uranium gun-type device (code name "Little Boy") was detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9, a plutonium implosion-type device (code name "Fat Man") was detonated over Nagasaki, Japan. These two bombings resulted in the deaths of approximately 225,000 Japanese people (mostly civilians) from acute injuries sustained in the detonations. Most were killed due to the Impact Force and the Shock waves given off but a bunch were killed due to radiation. Some survivors today got cancer due to too much exposure to the toxic radiation.
