By a very long way it will be one of the commercial strains used for meat - something like Ross Cobb. Something like 1.5 million tonnes of poultry are reared for meat in the UK each year, to give you some idea of the numbers involved.

If you were just thinking of traditional pure breeds kept by hobbyists as back garden hens, it would be Marans, Welsummers (both lay dark brown eggs), and Araucanas (blue or green eggs).

That would depend on where you are living. In North America and the rest of the world the most commonly seen breeds in backyards are dual purpose birds. These birds lay eggs for the first two years of life and are then used for the family table as food. Breeds you will see in America are Plymouth Rocks and Rhode Island Reds. In Australia the Leghorn, Australorp and Rhode Island Red are popular.

In Great Britain, Sussex and game birds. These preferences change as breed come in and out of popularity and therefore price as livestock.

There are many popular breeds of chickens, depending on their intended purpose or use. For example, the best meat chickens are thought to be Cornish Cross or other heavy birds.

Conversely, the most popular breeds of chickens for heavy egg laying include Leghorns, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Red, Black Star, Red Star and Buff Orphingtons.

For fun, popular breeds include silky varieties as well as Aracounas that lay green and blue eggs.
