Claude Monet was a European impressionist painter. He painted all sorts of things. Mostly things that were simple. He painted them in different lights at different times of day. He painted over 20 paintings of the Rouen Cathedral, over 60 lilies, over 20 haystacks/grain-stacks, alot of his garden (not sure how many), and lots of others.
1. Roen Cathedral made in 1892
2. Water-lily pond made in 1899
3. Water lilies made in 1916
4. Impression Sunrise made in 1873
5. Haystack End of Summer made in 1891
It is not known whether Monet considered one of his many paintings better than others. Today's Monet-fans favor several of them, e.g. some of his many paintings of waterlilies in his garden at Giverny, his preferred subject for many years.
Two of the most famous paintings by Claude Monet are Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (In Sun) of 1894, and Impression: Sunrise of 1872. These art paintings may be seen in the Metropolitan Museum and Musee Marmottan, respectively.
Although identifying "the" most famous paintings is challenging, these are the two art paintings which appeared most frequently in over twenty art history books -- so these are his most famous paintings, according to a group of 4o art history experts.
Impression Sunrise, Water Lilies (painted many times), Haystack series, Rouen Cathedral series, Poppies Blooming, Woman with a Parasol, ...
Claude Monet "invented" impressionism, a style of painting loved by millions of people. So a great many of his paintings are well known. A few titles at random: "Impression, Sunrise", "Poppies Blooming", "St Lazare Train Station". He also painted series of the same subject, as "Haystacks", "Rouen Cathedral", "Water Lilies", and others.
One of the Water Lilies paintings was sold at Christie's 24 June 2008, £40,921,250 ($80,451,178), setting a new auction record for the artist.
