The NHL was formed in the fall of 1917 and started play on December 19, 1917 with five teams, the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Quebec Bulldogs, the Ottawa Senators and a team in Toronto under the control of the Toronto Arena. This Toronto team had no name and was simply referred to as the Arenas. The Toronto team did win the Stanley Cup but they were not named the Maple Leafs!!

The Ottawa Senators were a founding franchise of the NHL when it started play in 1917/18. The Senators played in the NHL until 1934 when financial problems forced the owners to move the club to St. Louis where they were known as the St. Louis Eagles. This club only played for one season then disbanded. When Ottawa was granted a new franchise and started play in 1992/93, the owners of the new club decided to name the team after the old team that had played in the league many years before.
