What is the risk of getting malaria in Mexico?
Considering that in the United States there were 1,925 malaria cases reported during 2011, and during the same year there were 1,124 cases in Mexico, the probability of getting malaria is slim to none. The odds would be as follows: Odds of contracting malaria in the United States: 1 in 160,000 Odds of contracting malaria in Mexico: 1 in 100,000 And for comparison purposes, other odds are provided: Odds of dying due to a lighning strike: 1 in 84,000 Odds of dying due to a snake bite or bee sting: 1 in 100,000 Odds of dying due to an earthquake: 1 in 130,000 So, there is actually a higher possibility of dying by a lightning strike than to catch malaria in Mexico.
