President Washington originally had 4 top officials in his appointed cabinet :

  • Secretary of Foreign Affairs (renamed Secretary of State in 1789)]
  • Secretary of War (merged with Navy in 1947 to form the Department of Defense)
  • Secretary of the Treasury
  • Attorney General (made head of the Justice Department in 1870)

The first Cabinet members were Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson; Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of War Henry Knox; and Attorney General Edmund Randolph.
