There are the Battlements (They lined top of castle walls, provided protection for defenders),Curtian Wall (Outer wall of the castle), Crenellations, Drawbridge (This is a bridge that goes over the moat or dicth, it is drawn up under attack), Inner bailey, Outer bailey, Keep/donjon (Strongest part of castle. Defenders can come here when the rest of the castle falls down during a sage), Loopholes, Machicolations, Merlons, Moat (dicth filled with water surrounding castle. A dicth can be used instead of moat.),Parapets and finally Portcullis (a large wooden gate, Lowered throught slots in the gatehose to defend when under attack). There wasen't one. Every part of the castle mattered. There was the Baron, the moat and drawbridge, the tower, the portcullis, etc. Each part had a purpose, e.g; the baron, moat and drawnbridge and portcullis all were used for safety reason ( to protect themselves from enemeys. The tower was for living in.
