There are no particular advantages or disadvantages to an extended family. An extended family exists. Every person has one or more extended families. The advantages or disadvantages come into play if you live as an extended family in one location, as opposed to living as a nuclear family or an individual, with your extended family scattered about.

The family never truly experiences the intended separation and therefore the mother, father, child relationship suffers. The extended family may put demands and expectations onto a family member that are possibly unhealthy and overly self-centered. The extended family themselves also do not form healthy relationships outside of this living situation for they may feel obligated to place much devotion to this grouping. The children in this situation suffer an emotional cost due to a "tug of war" for a lack of better words for emotional, financial, and other types support put onto their mother, father, or themselves from the extended family member or members. Very importantly, the natural mother and father roles tends to step back in some situations due to family pressure or opinions which is unbalancing for the child who is building a healthy foundation of self through these naturally intended roles. The children tend to look at the extended family as their immediate family (mother, father level) which is not natural as the family as a whole matures for various reasons. The extended family members still see themselves as very separate from these children causing immediate family expectations to fail for the children. These failings may lead to poor mental health issues and possible substance abuse. The effects will surely follow the children into their own family causing disturbance as well.
