This is the standard answer for both split ring commutator and slip ring.

A split ring commutator is to reverse the current direction through an armature every half turn

A slip ring is to ensure that the current continue to flow to the external circuit

Last bit of additional information.

Carbon brush ensure that the slip ring are in contact with the circuit containing the external load

*Note: Do not get confused with split ring commutator(d.c.generator) & slip ring(a.c. generator)

The slip rings are used with brushes to connect the revolving field coils to a DC source. There are two rings, one ring is positive and the other ring is negative. By varying the field voltage the voltage of the generators output is controlled.

A slip ring is electromechanical in nature, and allows electrical energy to be transferred from a spinning device to a stationary one. These objects are commonly found in generators and related machines.

Slip rings are used in AC while split rings are used in DC generators

What is the purpose of Slip Rings?

To facilitate the conveyance of electrical current and/or signals between the static and rotating parts of a device.

What is the need for slip rings?

Slip rings offer a means of connecting a rotating winding to an external circuit. Slip rings are used when an a.c. output is desired.

Where can I obtain electrical slip rings online?

Electrical slip rings can be purchased from a number of online sources. Some of these stores, include Mercotac (www.mercotac.com) and Lucas Alternator slip rings (at www.tradekey.com).

What is the differences between the slip and split rings?

Split rings are in AC generators ( alternating current) while slip rings are in DC current (direct current).

Why are the slip rings needed in dc motor?

Slip rings are needed to connect a rotating armature to external fixed circuits.

Purpose of slip rings?

slip ring is connect on shaft of motor to collect current from commutator without any complicate connection and with use of it resistors can be insert in circuit and therefore speed control of motor can easily achive

Where can I purchase electrical slip rings?

Electrical slip rings are available from Sibley.com and Mercotac.com. You can also find them at local electrical supply stores.

What is the purpose of a slip roll?

The purpose of a slip roll is for one to taste better food by making a slip roll. In addition, a slip roll has a purpose of allowing one to eat more comfortably.

What is a hydraulic slip ring?

Hydraulic slip rings are similar to electrical slip rings and transmit fluid power from a stationary source to rotating parts. The hydraulic slip rings are also known as Fluid Rotary Unions (FRU). Fluid pressure is connected from a stationary tube (the stator) to the rotating parts through either single or multi-ported rotating component (rotor) of the slip ring. Multiple application combined slip rings are also wide used to transport not only hydraulic power but also electrical as well as communication cables through a combined slip ring.

How many Slip rings in synchronous motor?

If the synchronous motor is single phase then there are two slip rings & if this motor is three phase so the slip rings are three in number. Correction; I have never seen a single phase synchronous motor. It would cost more that it was worth. A synchronous motor has a separately excited field. If the excitation comes from a stationary DC source it has 2 slip (collector) rings. A brushless induction motor has no slip rings because the exciter armature rotates and so do the rectifiers. A permanent magnet motor, used with variable frequency drives, is another type of synchronous motor that has no slip rings. A three phase motor with 3 slip rings is a Wound Rotor motor. Wound rotor motors are variable speed motors that were used for such applications as bridges and cranes before variable speed drives.
