Joan of Arc probably had the most unusual role. As a seventeen year old, illiterate, peasant girl, she commanded the French Army, a position unique in history. (As I think about it, the real miracle of Joan of Arc was not so much that she turned the tide of the war, many people have done things like that. The real miracle is that she got the job.)

Sabina von Steinbach was a stone mason, and when her father died, she took over his contract to complete Strasbourg Cathedral.

Christine de Pizan was a professional poet. She earned her living by publishing books of poetry and literary criticism.

Since most people of the Middle Ages lived on farms, most women worked in agriculture.

Most were mothers of families.

Many were nuns.

Many did other things; the list of these things is very long and includes most things we regard as male occupations, ranging from stonemason to knight. In fact, a number of women were monarchs ruling major countries.

Medieval woman was deprived from all human rights including her rights to work, to have her own business, to inherit, to have her choice of her husband, and/or to witness in court. She was looked for as a house property to take care of children, cook, and satisfy her husband desires and requirements.
