All scientists who take their questions to Antarctica are called Principal Investigators. They originate the questions to be answered and apply for the funding to conduct the research on the continent. They work there in person to collect the data they need to answer the question(s) they've asked about the health of planet earth. They may also train assistants to help collect the data and/or to monitor their data collection efforts during the winter.
