ADD-ADHD Non-Stimulant Medication
What are the side effects of Strattera if you do not have ADHD?
Can Strattera help you stay awake?
One of the potential side effects of Strattera is insomnia (being unable to fall asleep), however, not all patients experience this side effect. Strattera is not a controlled drug which means there is little to no chance for people to abuse the medication. This is because the side effects (like insomnia) experience by other ADHD medications are not as common with Strattera.
If you do not have ADHD and take Strattera what will happen?
What would you be taking the Strattera for? If your doctor thinks your symptoms can be helped by strattera, then hopefully that is what will happen! One doesn't necessarily have to have ADHD to have the benefits of this medication, at least that is what the dr's have told me. As for the side effects, that's another story, I heard, among other things, it can cause high blood pressure. You should consult your physician for these answers.

Can Strattera help with depression?
I have had dysthimia (I think that is the right spelling) which is a difficult to treat, but not severe, depression. I have been on Strattera for 10 days, and I feel that the depression is lifting some. But there are other side effects that make it debatable if it is worth it. Strattera was originally intended to be a new antidepressant drug, but in clinical trials, no benefits could be proven. Since Strattera works to inhibit the reuptake of norepinephrine, the manufacturer ran trials on the effectiveness of Strattera for ADHD and was subsequently approved (Information is from Wikipedia), making Strattera the first non-stimulant ADHD medication on the market. If your doctor is giving you Strattera for depression, you might want to request a new drug, as that is basically an off-label use since Strattera is for ADHD and has been shown in clinical trials to NOT be effective for depression.
What are the withdrawal symptoms of Strattera and can you hear voices in your head when trying to sleep?
Can focalin and Strattera be taken together?
Focalin is dexmethylphenidate, a form of methylphenidate that has a lower abuse potential than Ritalin (methylphenidate) and other amphetamines, such as Adderall. It is a psychostimulant. It is primarily used for treatment of ADHD. Strattera is a non-stimulant ADHD medication that is commonly prescribed due to its very low potential for abuse. Taking Strattera and Focalin together increases the risk of cardiovascular problems and other side effects, such as nausea, insomnia, etc. Focalin is contraindicated with Strattera. I'm unaware of any cases where both are taken together.

What chemicals does Strattera have in it?
Strattera is the first and only non-stimulant medication approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults. Strattera is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, a class of ADHD treatment that works differently from the other ADHD medications available. Strattera is available by prescription only.

What are the potential side effects of Strattera?
Most children in clinical trials who experienced side effects were not bothered enough to stop taking Strattera. The most common side effects were upset stomach, decreased appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, tiredness, and mood swings. As with all ADHD medications, growth should be monitored during treatment although height and weight data measured for up to 3 years indicates minimal, if any, long-term effects. In rare cases, Strattera can cause allergic reactions, such as swelling or hives, which can be serious. Your child should stop taking Strattera. Call your doctor or healthcare professional if your child develops any of these symptoms. Strattera has not been tested in children under 6 years of age. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Contact your doctor or healthcare professional if your child develops any unusual symptoms.
