The term Open Fracture applies when a bone has broken or snapped and one or even both the broken ends have pushed through the skin. You can clearly see the broken end of the bone. Hope this helps.

The main signs and symptoms of open fractures are:

  1. immediate pain
  2. bone protruding through the skin
  3. may be bleeding, and may be arterial bleeding that needs immediate first aid
  4. fracture site may show a 'deformity', for examples, the leg twisted backward below the fracture site, or the ankle / wrist at an odd angle
  5. may be immediate swelling
