I have a motor mount going bad. When I shift from park into drive sometimes I hear this THUMP and it is LOUD. That is tell-tale sign of the motor mount being bad.

It is the engine shifting because there is no mount to hold it in place.

It's really loud like WHUMP!!!! :-)

As far as I know, this is not something u want to let go too long as it can be very dangerous should the other side of the mount break too.

Yes. However the motors and transmissions need to be the same. Mercury Sables and Ford Tauruses share the same powerplant. So, if you have a 3.0L OHV V6 12V Vulcan motor then any Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable with the 3.0L OHV V6 12V Vulcan motor can supply you with a transmission. However, if you have a 3.0L DOHC V6 24V Duratec motor, you MUST use a transmission from a Duratec motor. There are also 2 different transmissions, the AX4S and the AX4N. They are not directly interchangeable, and would require a full PCM change as well as axleshafts. The best choice would be to select a vehicle with the same motor and transmission for a trouble free drop in replacement, but it can come from either a Sable or Taurus without any issues.

Not if it's a V6. It will fit in a Ford Taurus.

The transmission dip stick on a 1994 Mercury Sable is located on the driver's side of the motor. It has a white-handled ring and it is about midway between the radiator and the back fire wall.

It could be a thermostat that is stuck open or maybe a bigger problem...like the blend door is either jammed or broken as well.

User Avatar

This is very most likely to be a failed temperature blend door actuator motor. The motor is attempting to move the blend door, but due to broken gears inside, it can only get so far and then the door drops back down - thump thump thump.See "Related Questions" below for more on this relatively easy & not-too-expensive repair.

On a 1996 Mercury Sable : There were two engines from the factory : The 3.0 litre " Vulcan " V6 engine , which is an Over Head Valve / pushrod design engine or the 3.0 litre " Duratec " V6 engine , which is a Dual Over Head Cam ( DOHC ) design

The Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique here in the USA used the same spec motors, and in europe, the Mondeo used the same motors from the early '90s till around 2002. You can also mount a 3.0L duratec from a Taurus, Sable, or Escape, though the swap process is a little daunting for most people.
