Hard to start is the first sign. Stalling will come later followed by complete failure. Always replace the fuel filter before moving to the fuel pump. The filter may just be partially clogged.

More than likely the bearings in the fuel pump are failing. This is sometimes one of the first signs you will hear just before the fuel pump locks up. Replace the fuel filter ASAP.
