There are four groupings of three animals each in the Chinese Zodiac called trines. These three animals of a given trine share the same motivation and many characteristics.

The second trine consists of the Ox, Snake and Rooster. These are the meticulous, practical signs of the zodiac. They are hard-working, modest, industrious, loyal, patient, and morally upright, but can also be self-righteous, vain, judgmental, narrow-minded or petty.
The third trine consists of the Tiger, Horse and Dog. These are the outgoing, humanitarian signs of the zodiac. The seek to apply themselves whole-heartedly to what/whom they love. They are independent, honorable, loyal and protective, but can also be rash, rebellious, quarrelsome, anxious, or stubborn.
The fourth trine consists of the Rabbit, Goat and Pig. These are the calm, compromising signs of the zodiac. They are well-mannered and compassionate, yet detached and reserved. They are artistic and favor being surrounded by beauty. They are caring, self-sacrificing, creative, and empathetic but can also be naïve, insecure, indecisive or pessimistic.
