I'm a guy, and I know what you mean.
To be honest, it depends on what context the guy is staring in, the kind of guy he is, and what he feels/thinks at the time.
I myself tend to stare off in the distance when I'm thinking hard, and forget about the world around me. When that happens, I lose focus and my eyes tend to drift aimlessly.
Some guys stare when remembering distant things; I'm sure some girls do to. When bored, some guys 'zone out' and get lost in a train of thought.
Particular emotions can sometimes induce hard thought and concentration, such as love, anger, curiousity (obviously about nothing he's looking at), fear, nerves.
Another factor invlolved is hoe that guy reacts to external sensory input. Does he panic indiscriminately? Or copose complex and intuitive plans, and thoroughly act them out?
Overall, it could be said that the main reason for the 'thousand yard stare', he 'absence of mind' or whatever you want to call it, is intense concentration, when the guy in question doesn't have the brain capacity spare to worry about observation or focus.

It depends on what you mean. If you mean that the women is becoming a bit obsessed with the guy, some signs would be calling/texting him to much. Whenever you hang out with him you throw a fit when he has to leave. To correct this you need to give him a little bit of space.
