What are the required skills to be a civil engineer?

Must be able to travel extensively to work sites. Must be very exact in their work. Errors could create serious safety hazards for users of the structures they design. Make decisions that strongly impact their coworkers and company. Meet strict deadlines weekly. Can make most decisions and set most tasks without consulting a supervisor. Work both indoors and outdoors. Are sometimes exposed to contaminants when working on environmental projects. Are sometimes exposed to very hot or cold temperatures when visiting job sites. Often work around hazardous equipment such as excavators, cranes, and drill rigs. Often work from a van or car while at project sites. Sometimes work inside a building without heat or air conditioning. Have a moderate level of social contact. They work half of the time with other engineers and department staff, but spend time alone analyzing data and planning designs. Are often placed in conflict situations. Clients and engineers may disagree over the direction of projects. Deal with unpleasant, angry, or rude people monthly. Are greatly responsible for the work done by others. This is especially true for engineers when they sign final plans and reports. Work with a team that may include other engineers and scientists, field staff, and clerical staff. Communicate daily with coworkers by telephone and in person.

First, attend and graduate from an ABET-accredited 4-year Civil Engineering program.

Then, pass your Fundamentals of Engineering exam (can be taken your last year of college). This is typically 8 hours, and you receive an E.I.T. license certificate for passing.

After you pass the F.E. exam, you need to be employed as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.), and work under the supervision of a licensed engineer for four years. (or, a Master's Degree, typically 2 years, can substitute as one of these four years). This is required as "on the job training" essentially.

Finally, attend and pass the Professional Engineering exam. You will be given a certificate and a stamp with your licensing information.
