I recently quit taking Lexapro, after being on 5 mg for about 10 months. There are definite symptoms, including those listed by others bloggers. It should be noted that both scientists and doctors do not know exactly how SSRIs work, only that serotonin is responsible for mood enhancement. Recent studies have indicated that other chemicals also play a key role and we may be missing the bigger picture. In any case, I planned months in advance my weaning off of Lexapro, which required close coordination with my Neurologist. I should add that my Dr. is one of the top Neurologists in the area and is well respected. Part of the "plan" was to include L-Tryptophan (LT), a naturally amino acid. According to my Dr (and corroborated reporting that I have researched), L-Tryptophan has some of the same stimuli effects produced by Lexapro, without the side effects. Our "plan" included first reducing my dosage from 10 mg to 5 mg, and taking 500 mg of LT. Then I reduced my dosage to 5 mg, every other day, while still taking 500 mg. daily. Now I am only taking the LT. I expect that the recovery time will be challenging, as we are dealing with changing our chemical composition. It took us time to get here, so expect it to take an equal amount of time to get back to where we need to be without Lexapro. It is imperative that you have a plan with your Dr, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and have a support network. Here is a list of some of the symptoms I have experienced: *Restless nights, including bouts of heavy breathing and vivid dreams. *Tingling/burning in legs (which is one of the reasons that I began taking Lexapro in the first place). *Nausea/dizziness *Weight gain *Lack of motivation and energy. *Upset stomach (acid reflux) *Sore throat Keep your chin up and try not to think of this as a "disaster," "terrible," or "worst ever"... It is transitional and will mean that part of overcoming this to remember that our attitudes are part of the symptoms. I encourage those that have successfully weaned off of the drug to post the long-term prospectus.

Hello,

I have been on Lexapro 5 mg for about 5 years. The key is to stop grudually so you do not have the withdrawal issues which for me included being angry all the time about everything, and have a very short fuse. After the first few weeks this subsides, I am now taking 1 5mg lexapro every 3 days- after doing every 2 days for about 1 month. I am not as angry, and have my feelings back- the good and bad, I don't feel numb anymore to my emotions. Good luck, and get off the pills- life feels good for a change without a drug telling me so. I agree. I am not there yet, but I want to get there. Hopefully the chemicals flowing thru my system will soon be gone and i can get back to normality.

Will restarting Lexapro after 7-10 days without it stop the withdrawal symptoms and if so when?

I attempted to stop taking Lexapro a few months ago, after 6 days of the withdrawal symptoms I went right back on it. The symptoms stopped by the 2nd day and I felt like myself again. Lexapro works wonders with depression but wreaks havoc with it's discontinuation syndrom!

How soon after stopping lexapro do withdrawal symptoms kick in?

Simply put - anywhere from 8hours to 14 days.

Will you have withdrawal symptoms from lexapro 5 mg to 2.5 mg and any after the 2.5 Only on Lexapro for 3 months?

Everyone reacts differently from withdrawal or addition of medications, therefore I am unable to answer your question black and white. However, if you were on Lexapro 5mg by the mouth once per day for three months and now, as per your Doctors instructions are reducing it to 2.5mg and then discontinuing the medication you will most likely have no withdrawal symptoms or side effects.

How long do withdrawal symptoms last from stopping lexapro cold turkey?

It is not recommended to stop Lexapro cold turkey. Everyone's withdrawal period is different, and the amount of time it takes to be fully off the drug depends on many factors. Is it safe to take zanax to help with withdrawal from Lexapro?

Xanax can be prescribed by your doctor alongside lexapro and taking them at the same time is okay. I am on Lexapro and take Xanex for occasional bouts of anxiety or panic attacks. However, weening yourself off Lexapro with Xanex is probably not the best idea. If you are having withdrawal from Lexapro you should probably go back on it.
