For the Catholic point of view, the promises that God bestows to Baptism is that it takes away original sin, all personal sins and all punishment due to sin. It makes the baptized person a participant in the divine life of the Trinity through sanctifying grace, the grace of justification which incorporates one into Christ and into his Church. It gives one a share in the priesthood of Christ and provides the basis for communion with all Christians. It bestows the theological virtues and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. A baptized person belongs forever to Christ. He is marked with the indelible seal of Christ (character).

Roman Catholic AnswerThe baptismal graces are six, and are listed below. Sometimes one refers to the three gifts given in Baptism as the cardinal virtues of faith, hope, and love.

The gifts of Baptism, commonly known as graces are six:

1) removal of all guilt of sin, original and personal

2) removal of all punishment due to sin, temporal and eternal

3) infusion of sanctifying grace along with the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit

4) incorporation into Christ

5) entrance into the Mystical Body, which is the Catholic Church

6) imprinting of the baptismal character, which enables a person to receive the other sacraments, to participate in the priesthood of Christ through the sacred liturgy, and to grow in the likeness of Christ through personal sanctification.

What do the baptismal promises have to do with Confirmation?

At Baptism, the child's parents & godparents make the vows. At Confirmation, the young person makes the vows for him/herself..Catholic ChurchIn the Catholic Church, Confirmation is the second of the three sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist, all of which are given at the same time, shortly after birth, except in the Latin Rite, in which they are separated. Thus the baptismal promises are an integral part of all three sacraments, but the sacrament of confirmation is just the strengthening of the Holy Spirit to live out those promises. In all but the Latin Rite, the confirmand is a newborn and much too young to "renew" the vows for himself. So the Baptismal promises are integral to all three, but the specific action of Confirmation is the strengthening by the Holy Spirit to live out those promises.
