Three types of plate boundaries

Best Answer
  1. Convergent (or destructive): Where two plates are moving toward each other. Collisions between oceanic plates results in subduction of the more dense plate. Collisions between an oceanic plate and a continental plate may result in the subduction of the oceanic plate because oceanic plates are more dense than continental plates. Collisions between two continental plates results in uplift and mountain formation where neither plate subducts.
  2. Divergent (or constructive): Where two plates are moving away from each other. Divergent plate boundaries are the site of new crust formation, particularly at the mid-ocean ridges, where spreading plates are infilled with basaltic magma from the asthenosphere.
  3. Transform (or conservative): Where two plates slide (actually 'grind') alongside each other and neither plate subducts. Earthquakes are common at transform faults due to the grinding and snapping movements of the plates as they move.

The three types of plate boundaries are:

Convergent Boundaries - Where two plates are moving towards each other

(Volcanoes and mountain ranges form at this type of boundary)

Divergent Boundaries - Where two plates are moving away from each other

(Rift valleys form and sea floor spreading occurs at this type of boundary)

Transform Boundaries - Where two plates slide past each other

(Crust is neither created nor destroyed, but earthquakes often occur along transform boundaries)

Plate motion is believed to occur because of convection currents in the mantle.

All of the plate boundaries:

Constructive/Divergent

Destructive/Convergent (oceanic-oceanic)

Destructive/Convergent (oceanic-continental)

Conservative/Strike-slip (any 2 passing each other

Collision (continental-continental)

Can one plate have several types of plate boundaries?

All of the tectonic plates have different types of plate boundaries, most having all three types of plate boundaries. Convergent, where the plate is subducting under another plate, divergent, where the plate is pulling away from another plate, and transform boundaries where the plates are sliding past each other.
