The integumentary system helps maintain homeostasis primarily through temperature regulation from sweating. Other ways in which it helps is by forming a protective barrier to external environment, providing sensory reception for pleasure and pain, synthesizing vitamin upon exposure to sunlight, and containing Langerhans cells for the immune system to fight off bacteria and viruses.

The skin system is vital for the health of humans because it regulates sweat that releases bodily "Poisons" or rather unwanted and unneeded cells. It also sheds skin to keep dead skin from building up. The integumentary system also fights off infection in cooperation with the immune system sending antibodies to the skin. Regulating temperature is the most important way the skin maintains homeostasis (normal and good health of the body). If a person is sick the body can get a fever which is a signal of sickness and antibodies fighting off "enemies of the body" somewhere. If the skin does not release sweat or register a fever a human body can die. Therefore it is not merely a system to release sweat it is also a signifier when the body is sick. This helps us to seek help for our sicknesses.

The integumentary system plays a large role in maintaining a stable (homeostatic) body temperature. When our internal temperature rises we sweat which is a way of removing that extra heat in our body. When we are cold the arrector pilli muscles in our dermis makes our hair stand up which helps trap heat close to the skin helping to warm us up.
