I know one of the titles of the two presiding officers of the Senate. The one I know of is called President pro tempor (temporary presideant). If the Vice President is absent, the Senators choose this presiding officer.
The "President of the Senate" (who is the elected vice president of the United States, though he or she only votes in the case of a tie, and rarely presides over legislative proceedings), and the "President Pro Tempore," who is a senator who is elected by other senators to lead the senate in absence of the President of the Senate. It is the custom nowadays to always elect the majority party member with the longest seniority in the Senate.

The Vice President serves as the President of the Senate. They also choose a President pro tempore for when the Vice President is not available. The Speaker of the House, elected by the members of the House, is the leader of the House of Representatives.
The official titles of each presiding officer is: The Senate: Vice President The House of Representatives: Speaker of the House. When the VP is not available, they have a person who is called the President Pro Tempore.
The first is the Vice President who is in charge of the Senate meetings and can only vote in a tie between the Senators. If the President is absent they choose an alternate known as the President Pro Tempore (Temporary President) who is third in line of the Presidency after the Speaker of The House who is the presiding officer of the House of Representatives and the Speaker of The House will take over the Presidency should anything happen to the President and the Vice President.
