English For One, Perhaps German?

Answer 2

The most spoken languages in Europe, with the numbers of speakers, are:

German 84 million (Germany + Austria + part of Switzerland)

French 70 million (France + part of Belgium + part of Switzerland)

English 67 million (UK + Ireland)

Italian 61 million (Italy)

Spanish 46 million (Spain)

The figures are calculated by adding the populations of the relevant countries. They are approximate only.

Russian should be somewhere in this list has about 150 million speakers, but I can find no figures which say how many of these are in Europe.

Romance languages are languages based of Latin, the language of the Roman Empire. Some Romance languages include French, Italian, and Portuguese.

Germanic languages are languages that originate from Northern Europe (and Western Europe) and are all related as they were created by the Germanic people. Some Germanic languages include German, Swedish, and Dutch.

English is a controversial Western European language. It is referred to as a Germanic language, however, it is not completely Germanic. English is heavily based off of French as well as Danish-Germanic languages, due to the British Isles being ruled by the Danes for a period of time and then being switched to French rule. English is more Germanic than anything, so to dumb it down, it would be acceptable to say 75% of English is Germanic while 25% is Romance (in which case, it would be French).

There are only two language families in Europe: Indo-European and Uralic.

There are many different branches of Indo-European, which you may have thought were separate language families. This includes Romance languages, Germanic languages, Slavic languages, or the Hellenic language (Greek).

The Uralic languages in Europe include Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian.
