Well there are two muscles which bend the arm: bending your arm from a straight position to a bent position uses the bicep (Latin name - Bicep Brachii) which is on the topside of your upper arm. Bending your arm from a bent position to a straight position uses the tricep (Latin name - Tricep Brachii) which is on the underside of your upper arm. Both muscles work in sinc with each other, so as one muscle tenses and contracts (causing the arm to bend one way or the other), the other losens.

triceps and biceps The actions of flexion (bending) and extension (straghtening) are opposites and as such muscle do not work together to acheive them but against each other. The primary enxtensor of the elbow joint is as the above says the triceps muscle on the posterior conpartment, indeed this is the ony muscle of any significance in extension. The primary muscle of flexion however is not the biceps brachi (biceps) as most would expect. It is infact the brachialis muscle which is deep to the biceps. The brachialis' primary action is the flexion ofthe elbow and indees it it the primary muscle in this movement. The primary action of the biceps brachi on the other hand is actually suppination of the forearm and onyl when this is achieved can it assist in flexion of the elbow.

Your arm has quite a few muscles, but the ones in your upper arm are the biceps (the one you flex when you "make a muscle") and the triceps, which is on the back of the upper arm.

What are the muscles in the upper arm that cause it to straighten?

Tricep brachii is responsible for extension (straightening) of the arm at the elbow. There are 3 heads of the Tricep; the long, lateral and medial heads. The Tricep is an antagonist of the bicep and brachialis muscles of the upper arm, which both assist in flexion at the elbow joint.
