Sts. Peter and Paul who were both executed during the reign of Nero. Peter was the first Pope and first Bishop of Rome. Originally, Peter was the founding Apostle of the See of Jerusalem, turning that See over to James the Less, Apostle and son of Alpheus. James the Less is considered the first Bishop of Jerusalem. Peter, as Pope and Prince of the Apostles, presided at the first church council, The Council of Jerusalem, which dealt with the conditions of admission to Christianity for gentiles. Peter decided that gentiles did not first need to convert to Judaism to be true Christians, thus removing Christianity as a cult within Judaism and pioneering the way as one of the world's living religions.
