At the start of the Korean War, the two sides fighting were the North Koreans, with training and material support from the USSR, against South Korea, with training and material support from the US and the UK. When North Korea was on the brink of victory the US entered the war on the side of South Korea, officially as United Nations troops. Just when it seemed the South had the momentum to win, China entered the war for the North and fought the South and UN troops to a stalemate.
The two principal belligerents were South Korea (Republic of Korea) and North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea). This doesn't quite complete the picture, though. The People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union provided soldiers, supplies and monetary aid to the North. South Korea was supported, materially and with fighting men, by the US, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Greece, Colombia, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Ethiopia, India, Luxembourg, Norway, Phillipines, South Africa, Thailand and Sweden.

The cold war was about how two countries fought each other.
