Vitamin A, C, D, E, folic acid, and multivitamins and minerals are the main and current types of supplements.

Vitamin A improves vision, maintains healthy teeth, skin, skeleton, soft tissue, and mucous membranes. It can be found in eggs, cheese, meat, milk, liver, and kidneys. Carotenoids, dyes found in plant foods, can be made into a form of vitamin A. An example of a carotenoid is beta-carotene. It is a type of antioxidants what protect the body from harmful, unstable substances. All in all, if the body lacks in vitamin A, its immunity will be weaker thus opening itself to a variety of diseases. Additionally, without enough vitamin A, vision acuity will start to decrease and the deficiency will start a chain of unfortunate consequences. On the other hand, too much vitamin A can lead to infant sickness and birth defects. Large amounts of beta-carotene can turn the skin orange or yellow but it is possible to reverse the effects by halting intake.

Vitamin C exists as an antioxidant. It is very helpful for people over age 55 as it reduces the risk of eye cataracts. Vitamin C, like vitamin A, also protects the body from unstable substances known as free radicals. It helps the body heal itself and absorb iron, a necessary element for transporting oxygen to our body. Skin and bones benefit from the vitamin because it promotes health and wellness throughout the body. Vitamin C can be found in fruits and vegetables, such as, but not limited to, Oranges, green peppers, and tomatoes.

Vitamin D is known for building and maintaining strong bones. It decreases the likelihood of getting osteoporosis. It also helps the body's nerves, immunity, and muscular system. Vitamin D can be found in milk, fish, and egg yolks. The body actually creates vitamin D from sun exposure. It is highly recommended for infants to take vitamin D if they are breast-feeding. Seniors, obese individuals, and dark-skin individuals should also take the vitamin.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. It is involved in the functioning of the immune system and metabolic processes. Vegetable oils, seeds, and margarine contain vitamin E. People with liver disease and cystic fibrosis are not advised to take vitamin E for it is detrimental rather than helpful.

Folic acid is a B vitamin, which helps the body create new cells. The use of folic acid before and during early pregnancy reduces the risk of birth defects in the nervous system of the baby. Fruits, dried beans, peas, and nuts all contain folic acid.

Multivitamins and minerals are extremely beneficial to those who are over 65. They reduce the chances of illnesses by almost half. Multivitamins are supplements that contain all of the other vitamins if one does not receive the proper amount of nutrition. They should not replace normal meal routines but rather be used as a supplement.
