There are many uses, one that comes to mind is simulations, and data recording.
Have you heard about a mass particle accelerator? There is one under Switzerland called the Hadron Collider, they would have used simulations to see if it was stable before testing it it's self, they had to use computers to record the data captures when colliding particles.
