Animals respond to stimuli in many different ways.
For example:
When an animal is frightened, it's heart will beat faster. When it is at ease, it's heart will slow down until it is at a normal pace.

If there is food nearby, an animal's first instinct would be to eat it. If the animal is aware that it is poisonous, it will probably avoid the food.

If an animal is, or feels threatened, it will act more aggressive, and some will try to act bigger, or the animal's heart rate will increase and the animal will run away.

Finally, an animal may act more aggressive if another animal of it's *herd* is killed by a predator.

you would first have to look at the different stimuli present in an animal's environment

if there is a presence of immediate danger, there's the classic "Fight or Flight" response

if food is present it's usually "eat", but if the animal knows the food to be dangerous, it would be "avoid"

if a change in habitat or climate occurs, there's the "get over it, or get out" response.

to summarize, the three main responses to stimuli are: Adapt, Avoid, or Ignore
