Food reaches the stomach through the oesophagus after it is ingested. It enters the stomach throught the cardiac sphincter, a band of circular muscles that allow the entrance of food substances into the stomach. the food in the stomach is then acted upon by the gastric gland present in the stomach that secrete gastric juices- HCl, renin and Pepsin. Pepsin acts on the proteins present in the food to convert them into smaller molecules called peptides. This action of pepsin requires the presence of Hcl acid as pepsin works better in an acidic medium. In this way, food is broken down. Moreover, the stomach in the mean time performs peristalsis, the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of muscles. This also results in breaking down of food.
