The technical definition of 'work' in Physics is (force) times (distance).

So I suspect the factors you're fishing for are force and distance.

work = force * net distance traveled (<-- the two factors)

Hence, if the object stops at the starting point, it has done no work.

so practically mass and force in a scientific, and quite remarkable way.

Use the definition of work: how much force you apply, and over what distance you apply it.Or, if you know the initial speed and the desired final speed, calculate the kinetic energy for each of those (just use the standard formula for kinetic energy), and subtract.
