Back in the day, Proxies was used to virtually connect computers to networks that wasn't physically at the network area. As in you have a computer in area A and a computer in area B, you would use a proxy to link both of those computers so it seems like computer B is within area As network, or vise versa. Computer A would also be running a encrypted layer, if it has, so if monitored from area B, all they would see a lot of bandwidth being used from one connection.
Today, people use a more "user-friendly" service that has surpassed the use of proxies, but still uses its technologies, VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) are networks dedicated to only be connected to and its computers to only be used for monitoring services. VPNs use more resources this way by the computers just standing in idle for connections to come in, while proxies; theres already a computer within the network at all times on the network running for its purpose waiting for a other computer to come in to do the same thing.

Proxies:
Lets say a whole bunch of your friends are at a party, but you can not come for some reason. So you choose to just buzz in through a webcam, and just hang out like that.
People come by the computer and look into the webcam to talk to you, chat, socialize through the computer. Your at a different location, while the entire "Party/Network" is over in a other location.
VPNs:
The room is empty. Not a soul to be seen, just computers lined with computers. Then you, and all your friends connect from etirely diffrent locations, to this one "Party/Network" And you all socialized like that.
