Incidentally, everyone even halfway educated at the time knew the world was round, they just thought it was too large for a westerly route to Asia to be practical. And they were right. given the state of sailing technology at the time. Columbus' plan was based on a notion that the world was smaller than it actually is; if he hadn't serendipitously run into the Americas less than halfway to China, he'd probably have starved (or even more likely died of thirst) in the middle of the ocean.
